OVERVIEW

The true style and flavor of Korea

Step through the gate, and the first thing to greet you is the deep, soft chime of the wind bell under the eaves, ringing as it meets the breeze.

Philkyungjae is an old house that has carried 500 years of history, keeping a thread of old Seoul alive. Designated Traditional Building No. 1 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1987, it was later reborn as a restaurant devoted to authentic royal court cuisine — a quiet retreat in the heart of Seoul that shares the true style and flavor of Korea.

The hanja signboard reading "Philkyungjae", brushed by a skilled master, quietly leads us into the past.

ANCHAE · SARANGCHAE

The inner and men's quarters

It was once a grand house of ninety-nine kan (bays). Over the long years much of it was lost; what remained — the inner quarters (anchae) and the men's quarters (sarangchae) — was taken apart and restored in 1994, and in 1999 the house was refurbished to serve royal court cuisine, as it does today.

SINDOBI

Memorial stele

Standing proudly in the rear garden is a sindobi, a memorial stele honoring the achievements of Nokcheon Yi Yu (1645–1721). Under King Sukjong, Yi Yu served as Mayor of Hanseong (Seoul) and later as Chief State Councillor. Overriding every objection at court, he had Bukhansanseong Fortress built and made the capital's defenses secure.

Nokcheon Station on the Seoul subway takes its name from Yi Yu's pen name.
