OVERVIEW.

Step through the gate, and the first to greet you is the deep, gentle ring of the wind bell catching the breeze.

Philkyungjae is an old house that has carried 500 years of history, keeping a living thread of old Seoul. Designated Traditional Building No. 1 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1987, it was later reborn as a restaurant specializing in authentic royal court cuisine — a quiet retreat in the heart of Seoul that shares the true style and taste of Korea.

The hanja name board “必敬齋 (Philkyungjae),” brushed by a skilled master, quietly leads us into the past.

THE HOUSE

It was once a grand house of ninety-nine kan (bays), vast as a whale’s back. Over the long years much of it was lost; the surviving main quarters (anchae) and men’s quarters (sarangchae) were dismantled and restored in 1994, and in 1999 the house was renewed to serve royal court cuisine — as it does to this day.

SINDOBI

Standing proudly in the back garden, the sindobi (memorial stele) honors the achievements of Nokcheon Yi Yu (1645–1721). Under King Sukjong he served as Mayor of Hanseong (Seoul) and later as Chief State Councillor; overcoming fierce opposition at court, he built Bukhansanseong Fortress and strengthened the defense of the capital.

Nokcheon Station on the Seoul subway takes its name from his pen name.
